We spend a lot of time and energy writing about all of the fun you will have with your hot tub, the one you bought at Spa Max, your Corona hot tub dealer. And while it is all true, you will have a blast with your hot tub to be sure, there are also a few things you need to be made aware. There are safety issues that need to be addressed.

A hot tub is just like all of the other cool adult toys people buy. While they are fun to use, you must use them the right way and beware of safety issues. For example, you wouldn’t ride your jet ski while intoxicated, that is a bad decision that could spell catastrophe.

So while we hope you thoroughly enjoy your hot tub, we also hope you make smart adult decisions when using it. Here are a few risks and things you should not do in your hot tub.

Hot Tub Rash

There are all sorts of bacteria that could invade your hot tub if you don’t keep it properly chlorinated and the right pH levels. One of the more common infections people can suffer in a hot tub is folliculitis or better known as hot tub rash. This is a skin infection that causes blisters and bumps and may turn your skin red, but will typically resolve itself on its own.

Don’t Soak with Wounds

People with open sores of any kind should not be allowed in the hot tub. The hot water is the ideal environment for spreading infection. The same can be said for rashes and other injuries. If you have any type of injury, skip the hot tub altogether.

Hot Water

Most people find that keeping their hot tub water between 100 degrees and 103 degrees is plenty hot. Higher temperatures are dangerous and can put undue strain on the cardiovascular system. So be aware of the temperature of your hot tub.

Horseplay

It all starts off seemingly innocent enough; a little teasing and water play and then things get quickly out of control. We all enjoy acting like kids from time to time, but you don’t want to do this in the hot tub. With the limited space in the water, this is no place to contain action. It might be fun, but somebody could easily get hurt.

Storms

Never use your hot tub during extreme weather conditions. If you are planning on having a hot tub party and there is an electrical storm, keep everybody out of the hot tub and move your party inside where everybody will be a lot safer.

Soaking Alone

Take precautions when you are soaking in the hot tub all alone, like staying awake and aware of your surroundings. If you have been drinking or have any type of medical condition, including high or low blood pressure, refrain from using the hot tub on your own, It will be better if you wait for a companion.

Alcohol

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but alcohol and hot tubs just don’t mix. We get it, you watch reality shows and movies in which the cast has a blast in the hot tub while chugging beer and taking tequila shots. But we don’t recommend doing that. You should also avoid the hot tub if you are using drugs, even some prescription medications.

One reason is that alcohol and some medications can cause drowsiness and that is quite dangerous when you are soaking in very hot and relaxing water.

Birth Control

There are some people who think that they cannot get pregnant doing the deed in a hot tub. They would be wrong. Be smart about the decisions you make and be prepared if you think your hot tub encounter might lead to, well, you know where we are going with this.

Children

No child should ever be left alone in a hot tub, not for any amount of time no matter how short. You also need to have your hot tub secure when it is not in use. Parents who own hot tubs should know CPR and have a phone handy for emergencies.
