Americans Celebrate Labor Day With Barbecues, Camping and Hot Tubs
In the 19th century, the average American worked 12-hour days 7 days a week, all of this just to barely squeak by. Workers of all ages faced very unsafe working conditions and even basic necessities like clean air and sanitary facilities were quite scarce; most workers wouldn’t even get a break. On September 5th, 1882, 10,000 workers in New York took the day off unpaid to march in support of worker’s rights. Thus, that day is now remembered as the first Labor Day. The observation caught on in other cities and began a nationwide revolution.
Fast forward to 2016, a period of time when Americans celebrate Labor Day with barbecues, camping and hot tub parties. Labor Day has, if anything, become a way in which we say goodbye to the summer by having the championship of the three-day weekends. Now, such a send-off deserves better than your average party with hot tubs and great food, you need to throw an epic Labor Day party.
Pick a Theme
Your Labor Day bash needs a theme, make sure all of your invitees know what it is so they can put together festive outfits. Since you are basically forbidden from wearing white after Labor Day, a fun theme is a white-out party. That’s right, everybody wears as much white as possible. Jolly good fun it is. If you are the patriotic type, you could hold a red, white and blue party. Kind of boring we think, but each to their own.
Build a Menu
Your Labor Day party must include food and not the same boring stuff you have been serving your kids all summer. It’s time to spice it up a bit. Take full advantage of your Labor Day festivities by serving some great grilled dishes like Rib-eye steaks, chicken kabobs and salmon. For dessert, you can prepare a make-your-own-sundae bar. Sweet, dude, real sweet.
Decorate
Your Labor Day party is a festive occasion that deserves a color scheme and other decorations. Use red, white and blue as the colors and buy all the accessories you can find including balloons, streamers and even seasonal flowers.
Activities
Since you can’t get everybody in the hot tub at the same time, have some activities planned to keep people from growing bored. You could set up a volleyball court, encourage people to dance or provide a band who performs Van Halen covers.
And the cradle will rock!
